New Zealand, week #1
Days 1-3
We left L.A. at 11:45pm Friday, and arrived Sunday morning. Hooray for time zones and jet lag. We slept most of Sunday.
Monday and Tuesday we went around Hamilton while Dad was at work. We fed some pukekos and saw a couple shops. Rode the bus around town and saw a group of high school girls pounce on this poor high school boy, helped out by girls in the back of the bus. "Ask him if he comes here often!" "Do you come here often? Read any good books?" "Whereabouts do you live? Do you have any friends?"
We had a ridiculous amount of Asian food our first two days. Sushi for lunch, Mongolian barbecue for dinner, Thai noodles for lunch the next day and stir-fry that night. Insanity. But better than cooking myself, I suppose.
Oh, also I found out that prostitution is legal here! But I guess it's more in brothels or whatever. You don't see people on the streetcorners or anything.
Days 4-7
We went up to a beach house just north of Whangarei (where we lived when I was in high school). The beach house belongs to one of my high school friends. Her family let us use it. It was nice, but sadly it is Winter here, and thus not really beach season. I waded out into the surf, but it was too cold to swim.
Nathan and I walked out to the edge of the beach, and apparently the tide was coming in because we were soon standing on a little island. I dubbed it 'Nathan and Mandy Island', but he didn't think that would bring in the tourists. He carried me back to the shore so I didn't have to get my feet wet. It's been really romantic.
We visited SheepWorld. They have pink sheep out front. And then you walk around and there are lots of farm animals that you can feed. An alpaca bit Nathan. My favorite was the baby cows. You couldn't feed them the pellets like the other animals, but they were still sweet. Even though we didn't feed them, they still let us pet them and licked our hands. Cutiefaces.
We visited a Kauri park where they have lots of very old trees and amazing wildlife. We went on a nice bushwalk. They have amazing parks, with these wooden boardwalks through the trees. Very well-maintained.
We went up to Kawakawa and stopped at the World Famous Toilets. They're pretty cool. We also had curry pizza, which was unusual. We went to glow worm caves, which are always cool. And we stopped at the chocolate factory in Kerikeri. Amazing lemon truffles.
We took a boat tour out from Paihia to the hole in the rock. We got to go through the hole, which was cool. Saw several little islands. No dolphins out, but it was still pretty neat.
Back in Hamilton for tonight. Saw a rugby match, and 'our team' won. Can't say I understood any of the rules, but I suppose it was entertaining enough. Tomorrow we are heading out again for more adventure.
